West of Deloraine, down the Meander River and up Western Creek is a unique man made salmon farm. The Pyka family carved the farm out of the land by hand and formed themselves their own wetlands and natural bio-filter for farming salmon.
Natural Bio-Filter, Salmon Farm & Waterfall
41° SOuth Tasmania
The setting is within true Tasmanian bushlands, featuring wooden seating areas made from fallen trees and surrounded by tree coverage for shelter against the hot Tassie sun.
Head into the cafe and find a wide range of products made on site, salmon, spices and other ginseng based products. Treat yourself to a guided (10+ people only) or self-guided tour and see everything that the property has to offer. Receive a tasting and learn about how they are made and how they are used. Next on the tour, wander past a range of aquaponics, ginseng patches and wetlands until you find yourself on a track to visit the on site waterfall, Montana Falls.
Back towards the shop you’ll swing past the salmon tanks, all at various stages of life and end up reaching a feeding pool full of mature aged fish. You’ll see plenty of friendly salmon and trout surface for a feed as you dust the pond with their food, watch for their coloured scales to show the two types apart. Keep an eye out for the resident goose though, he’s always looking to get in on the feed!
With the tour finished, sit down with something tasty from the menu and enjoy the view.
